Fun Fact

Pleasantville was home to Sonora Webster Carver, the first female horse diver. She was born in Georgia in 1904 but moved into the area where she would live to be 99 years old. In response to an advertisement, Carver became a circus attraction. She would ride a horse as it dove from as high as sixty feet into a pool. During a performance in 1931, Carver dove but landed off-balance with her eyes open. Tragically, it left her blind in both eyes. This did not discourage her, and she continued to perform until 1942. Horse diving became less popular by the 1970s due to animal rights activists.

Some other notable people from the area include:

  • Ellen Bass - author and poet
  • Dino Hall - former running back for Cleveland Browns
  • Rodney Jerkins - Grammy Award-winning songwriter and musician
  • Dave Vonner - toy designer
