History

The area was the home of the Lenape Native American tribe and the Hackensack tribe. They lived in settlements along the river and Overpeck Creek. Myndert Myndertsen received a landownership as part of the New Netherland colony that included most of the land in the Hackensack and Passaic valleys. However, battles ensued with the Natives, and they ended up vacating the area.

In 1655, the sachem of the Hackensack, Oratam, granted land to Sara Keirsted. Keirsted was fluent in the native language and aided in the negotiations between them and the settlers. The next landowner was Samuel Edsall that purchased the area known then as the English Neighborhood in 1668.
