The borough of Ridgefield is located in the southern section of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. The 1,836.8-acre borough has 211.2 acres of water, such as the Hackensack River, Overpeck Creek, Mill Creek, and Bellmans Creek. In 1655, the sachem of the Hackensack, Oratam, granted land to Sara Keirsted. Keirsted was fluent in the native language and aided in the negotiations between them and the settlers. The next landowner was Samuel Edsall that purchased the area known then as the English Neighborhood in 1668.
