Rockaway Valley

The neighborhood of Rockaway Valley is situated in the western section of Boonton Township in Morris County, New Jersey. The nearby communities include Hibernia, Meridan, Powerville, Taylortown, and  Denville. The Rockaway River flows along the southern region of the neighborhood, and the Stony Brook flows along the eastern section heading south from Dixon Pond. A few of the roadways within the community are Farber Hill Road, Valley Road, Miller Drive, and Old Beach Glen Road. 

History

In 1758, the first settler recorded in the greater township was Frederick DeMouth, a French Huguenot. DeMouth owned a plantation that consisted of 672 acres on which the following farms would later be located:

  • Stickle
  • Bott
  • Kincaid

By 1783, as many as eight different schools had been constructed in the greater area. The Rockaway Valley Methodist Church was founded in 1842 by the congregation that Jacob DeMouth organized. Many of the early families in the area were wealthy, allowing the community to for a good school system. 

Neighborhood

In the western region of the community is the county park, Jonathan Park, named after a historical Indian that often stayed at the James Miller house. Hunting on the premises is allowed during designated times, such as bow hunting in the fall. The park takes up 555.97 acres and includes many additional amenities such as:

  • hiking
  • snowshoeing
  • cross-country skiing
  • bird watching

The neighborhood is also home to the historical Rockaway Valley Aerodrome. The airstrip discontinued operation approximately 20 years ago, but the area is great for an educational stroll. The two-mile trail has both exercise stations and guided signs that offer the history of the following:

  • development of radio beacon technology
  • guided pilots
  • the first blind flight

Demographics

The neighbors in the community are predominantly wealthy, making it among the 15% highest income neighborhoods in the United States. The following is a breakdown of the residents' occupations:

  • 61.7% executive, management, and professional roles
  • 25.2% sales and service jobs
  • 6.5% clerical, assistant, and tech support positions
  • 5.0% manufacturing and laborer occupations

The population includes 10.7% that were born in countries other than the United States. While 88.4% of the households speak English, some speak Chinese and Spanish. Additionally, 0.7% speak Urdu, the national language of Pakistan. Some common ancestries found within the neighborhood population include the following:

  • 29.9% Italian
  • 22.2% German 
  • 21.4% Irish
  • 11.3% Asian 
  • 8.9% Polish
