Roselle

Roselle is a borough situated in the central region of Union County, New Jersey. The 1696 acre neighborhood is located just south of Aldene and Roselle Park. West St. Georges Avenue creates the southern border while North Wood Avenue forms the western. Warinanco Park is located in the eastern section and acts as a separation from the neighborhood and Elmora. Chestnut Street and Chandler Avenue run north and south through the town's center, while 1st and 3rd Avenues run east and west along the northern section. 

History

The town was the first full community to be lit by an overhead wired electrical system that Thomas Edison built. On January 19, 1883, the system lit up the entire community encouraging other villages and cities to install the system. The town's very own First Presbyterian Church was the first church in the country solely lit up by electricity, the first in the world was the City Temple church in London, England. The church still stands on West 5th Avenue today. 

On December 20, 1894, the town was incorporated into a borough. It was named after the Roselle Land Improvement Company. 

Historical Landmarks

The Abraham Clark Memorial House that stands on the corner of West 9th Avenue and Chestnut Street was built in 1941. It is a replica of the original house that belonged to Abraham Clark, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The original house was located on Crane Street but burned down due to a fire in 1900. Clark was one of the five delegates from New Jersey that signed the Declaration of Independence. The others included:

  • John Hart - whose house and gravesite are in Hopewell
  • Francis Hopkinson - whose house is in Bordentown
  • Richard Stockton - whose home, Morven and his gravesite are both in Princeton
  • John Witherspoon - who lived at the Maclean House in Princeton and is buried at the Princeton Cemetery

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the neighborhood's population was 21,085, which included 7,407 households and 5,096 families. This was a decrease of 0.9% from 2000. The racial makeup of the neighborhood was the following:

  • 2959% white
  • 55.06% African American
  • 26.77% Hispanic or Latino
  • 2.23% Asian
  • 0.31% Native American
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 9.63% other races
  • 3.15% two or more races

The annual household income was $58,041, which was an increase from $51,254 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the working residents is the following:

  • 16.14% office and administrative support roles
  • 9.37% service and sales jobs
  • 6.26% foodservice industry positions
