Discovering Rosenhayn, NJ

Please enjoy the following guide to the history and highlights of the neighborhood brought to you by the workers' comp lawyers in Rosenhayn, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys.

Rosenhayn

The unincorporated community of Rosenhayn is a census-designated place, or CDP, located within the Deerfield Township in Cumberland County, New Jersey. The community covers 1,698.56 acres and includes a small portion of Parvin State Park. Deerfield is to the south, along with the community of Carmel.

History

The community was founded by the Hebrew Emigrant Aid Society of New York. In 1883, six families were sent by the Alliance to establish a location for the overflow of the community. However, due to support not being extended to the location, they abandoned the colony. In 1887, more Jewish families came to the area and were more successful at creating a community and within a year, 37 additional families joined. An agreement was made with the settlers to not only cultivate the land they were sold but to build in a set amount of time. This proved hard for the farms as their crops did not produce year-round crops. Some of the chief crops include:

  • berries
  • grapes
  • corn

Factories supplied work for the farmers during the months they could not cultivate the farms. There was a clothing factory, a brickyard, and a tinware manufacturing plant. By 1889 the community consisted of 67 families that owned 1,912 acres. As the community continued to evolve and grow, they built a school and a synagogue.

The Rosenhayn Synagogue, Congregation Or Yisroel,  was built around 1898. It is also referred to as the cornfield synagogue. The one-bedroom building still stands on Morton Avenue today. It is one of the few 19th-century synagogues remaining in the country.

Neighborhood

The community has other places of worship that include:

  • New Jerusalem Baptist Church
  • Rosenhayn United Methodist Church
  • Wesley Memorial AME Zion Church
  • Refuge Mission FBH Church

The Rosenhayn Fire & Rescue is located on Morgan Avenue and protects the greater Deerfield township areas. It consists of 46 volunteer firefighters and ten non-firefighting volunteers.

Demographics

In 2010 the community was home to 1,098 residents, which consisted of 382 households and 274 families. This was a decrease of 0.1% from the 2000 count of 1,099 residents. The following is the racial makeup of the community in 2010:
