The History of Secaucus, NJ

The personal injury lawyers in Secaucus, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys, have sponsored the article below about the neighborhood's history.

Secaucus

The town of Secaucus is situated in the northwestern region of Hudson County. It is located just north of Hoboken and south of East Rutherford and The Heights. North Bergen is the east, and Kearny is the west. The Hackensack River forms the western border, and Penhorn Creek flows along the eastern edge.

History

The town was initially part of the oldest municipality in New Jersey, Bergen, which Peter Stuyvesant purchased in 1658. Its name came from the Algonquian word "sekakes," with the translation relating to snakes. In 1900 the area officially became a borough, but in 1917 it became its own town.

Before becoming home to 55 pig farms, the area was covered in flower farms. However, by the early 1900s, pigs outnumbered humans with a population of 250,000 pigs. Meat farms were supplied to the neighboring towns in Newark and across the Hudson to New York. However, by 1950, the New Jersey Turnpike construction brought in commuters that opposed the odors produced by the farms, so they began to shut down.

Neighborhood

The town has the most "green" space in Hudson County and is the most suburban in the county. Laural Hill Park, located on Laurel Hill Road, is a fairly newly established county park but is home to a great deal of history. The most prominent features are the volcano-formed rock structures that date back more than 150 million years ago. Some of the rocks are over 150 feet tall. The park offers many recreational amenities to its visitors, along with a great deal of open space along the Meadowlands. Some of the features include:

  • water access to the Hackensack River
  • kayak rentals
  • fishing piers
  • athletic fields
  • playgrounds, like the SS Fun Ship
  • picnic areas

There are many retail areas in the town, such as the Secaucus Plaza, located off Route 3. In addition, several outlet shops are located in the industrial section of Harmon Cove. Some of the outlet shops found there are:

  • Tommy Hilfiger Clearance
  • Children's Place Outlet
  • Prato Menswear Outlet

Many large retailers and sports companies have their headquarters in the town, such as:

  • Children's Place
  • MLB Network
  • Red Bull New York
  • Panasonic
  • Hartz Mountain Industries

Demographics

Per the 2010 census, the town's population was 16,264, broken down into 6,297 households and 4,112 families. This was an increase of 2.1% from 2000. The racial breakdown of the townspeople was the following:

68.40% white
