South Vineland

The unincorporated community of South Vineland is located within Cumberland County, New Jersey. It is less than a 15-minute drive to the Millville Executive Airport. The main roadways in the area are Sherman Avenue, Chestnut Avenue, and NJ Route 55. Its only body of water is Crystal Lake, located in South Vineland Park and within the South Vineland Disc Golf Course. Crystal Lake is a system of five lakes among the preserved area. 

History

The area of South Vineland is part of the city Vineland that was incorporated on July 1, 1952, with the merging of the two areas, Landis Township and Vineland Borough. A celebration followed with speeches and even a parade. The Vineland name came from founder Charles K. Landis' realization that the area's fertile ground was great for growing grapes. 

In addition to grapes, the soil was suitable for the dandelions brought over by early immigrants from Italy. The plants have been growing as a crop in the area, and since 1973, an annual festival has been celebrated to honor the area's recognition as the Dandelion Capital. The celebration consists of eating dishes that contain dandelions, such as the following:

• Salad - with bacon and boiled eggs
• chicken soup - similar to Italian Wedding soup
• ricotta and dandelion ravioli - pasta, cheese, and dandelions
• Chicken Vesuvius - grilled chicken, provolone, and roasted peppers

Points of Interest

The area is home to the Rowan College of South Jersey Cumberland Campus. The college was founded in 1966 under the name Gloucester County College but was renamed in 2019 to its current name. Academic programs that are offered include the following:

• Nursing and Allied Health
• Gloucester County Police Academy
• Accounting 
• Computer Graphic Arts 

Vineland is also the home of the only drive-in movie theater that is still in operation in the state, the Delsea Drive-In. The drive-in was built in 1949 and is located on Route 47 near County Route 552.  Although it shut down in 1987, it reopened in 2004. 

Neighborhood

The average home in the South Vineland neighborhood sells for $165,843, making it less expensive than 92% of other neighborhoods in New Jersey. A contributing factor to these low prices is that 30.5% are mobile homes. The area actually contains more mobile homes than 95.5% of other communities in the United States, in areas such as the Delsea Woods Mobile Home Park.
