The Early History of Tabor, NJ

The workers' comp lawyers in Tabor, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys would like to share their discovery of the town's history.

Tabor

The unincorporated community of Tabor, also known as Mt Tabor, is located in the township of Parsippany - Troy Hills in Morris County, New Jersey. The community is just south of Denville and north of Morris Plains. The main roadways in the area include Tabor Road, Parks Road,

History

After the land the Newark Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church was using for their camps meets was being sold in 1866, the church member began a search to relocate. In 1869 the Dickerson family purchased 30 acres and, three years later, purchased an additional 100-acre farm. The Dickerson farm would be the new camp meeting location.

The town was incorporated as a camp meeting in 1869. The religious services took place once a day, from Monday through Saturday. Services were offered three times on Sundays. Groups as large as 10,000 would gather. Most would stay in the tent-style accommodations, but some preferred to stay in the hotel that was built in 1877. The Arlington Hotel was built by Trustee David Campbell.

As the crowds lessened due to restrictions placed by the association, the tents were slowly replaced with year-round cottages. The Tabernacle, Bethel, and Ebenezer pavilions were built. The Bethel is the home of the services now.

Historical Landmarks

Along Simpson Avenue is the Mount Tabor Historical Society. The Society was formed in honor of Evelyn Blackford Clark in order to fulfill her desire to educate the visitors and residents on the history of the J. Smith Richardson Cottage and Mount Tabor. J. Smith Richardson was her great uncle and was one of the first camp meeting cottages built to replace the tents. The cottage was built in 1873 and incorporated a triple cottage design for the owners to take advantage of the small lot better.

The cottages have undergone multiple restorations to keep them in great shape. Painten' Place of Denville was generous enough in 2008 to donate the paint for each of the cottages' exteriors.

The Historical Society hosts an annual tour, where the cottages are made available for interior tours to the public. Members dress up in attire from that era, and there is a large quilt show located in the Tabernacle.
