Avon-By-The-Sea

The borough, Avon-By-The-Sea, is located within Monmouth County in New Jersey. The 345.6-acre area is surrounded on three of its sides by the Atlantic Ocean, Sylvan Lake, and the Shark River. It is 44 miles from Trenton and 45.7 miles from Elizabeth. 

History

Initially, the town was called New Branch. Many of the neighboring shorefront areas were used as summer resorts to the wealthy residents of  New York and Philadelphia. During one of Edward Batchelor's visits to Ocean Grove, he took a fishing trip to Shark River, passing through New Branch. He was so impressed with the area he purchased 300 acres from T.W. Finn. 

Batchelor was a tobacco manufacturer from Philadelphia. He hired surveyor Robert C. Love and engineer F.G. Harrison to develop the land in 1897. At first, Batchelor thought he would make the area the new home for his tobacco firm, but thanks to the advice of others, he began to create a resort town he named Key East. 

For the next ten years, the land was surveyed and sold in lots. Roads were constructed, and a sewer system was installed. The construction of the Avon Inn was completed in 1883, located on Sylvania Avenue. The Pavilion on Ocean and Norwood Avenues was also erected. 

In 1900 the town of Key East would become incorporated into borough Avon-By-The-Sea, named after the inn. The development would continue but not to the extent of taking away from the character of the resort town. A public school was built in 1908, followed by the library in 1916. The boardwalk and small shops would line the coastal edges of Avon Beach and Avon-by-the-Sea Public Beach, but it would maintain its conservative growth. 

Demographics

In 2010 the population was 1,901, comprised of 901 households and 477 families. The most common language spoken is English, but many speak Spanish and Polish, too. The racial breakdown of the residents is as follows:

• 96.95% white 
• 0.32% African American
• 3.73% Hispanic or Latino
• 0.63% Asian
• 1.26% other races
• 0.84% two or more races

The median income per household was $83,333. As many as 63.84% of the town's adult population have earned a four-year college degree or higher. The occupational makeup of the residents is the following:

• 16.91% executive or management occupations
• 12.59% business or financial occupations
• 12.1% service or sales
