Camden is the county seat and largest city in Camden County, New Jersey, United States, and is located directly across the Delaware River facing Philadlephia, PA. Camden is the 12th highest populated municipal in New Jersey, with an estimated population of about 73,000 stated in the 2019 census. The city was incorporated in February of 1828 and is made up of over 20 diverse neighborhoods.

History

The first known settlers arrived in Camden in the 17th century and settled along the Delaware River with hopes to compete against the local fur trade. Upon King Charles II's return from exile in 1660, the land owned by the King was sold to the New Jersey Quakers in 1673. The city quickly began to prosper after the ferry system was built along the Delaware River's east side, which assisted in trade between both Fort Nassau and Philadelphia.

Camden has been a secondary commercial and trade center for the Philadelphia area for over 150 years. However, in the early nineteenth century, this position started to change. In the 1800s, horses, ferries, and boats served Camden and helped connect the city with other Southern New Jersey towns to Philadelphia to generate business and pursue economic growth.
