Boonton Township

The township is situated in the northern region of Morris County in the state of New Jersey. It takes up 5,440 acres and includes 4.41%, or 243.2 acres, of water. Some of the waterways in the community include Rockaway River, Dixons Pond, Stony Brook, Deer Lake, Lake Tumble-In, Griffith Pond, and Hood Pond. The neighboring towns are Montville, Boonton, Mountain Lakes, Denville, and  Taylortown. 

History

In 1710, William Penn acquired 1,430 acres of land in the area. James Bollen's plantation spanned 1,507 acres by 1715, and by 1765, David Ogden bought the Great Boonton Tract from Burnet and Skinner. In 1867, when the township was officially incorporated as a township, these all fell within its borders. 

One of the first landowners, a French Huguenot extraction, was Frederick DeMouth in 1758. DeMouth's 672 acres resided on Penn's lot. This would later be home to the prosperous Stickle, Bott, and Kincaid farms. A German Palatine, Frederick Miller, purchased land on the Bollen lot, paying just 13 shillings per acre. This would later be owned by Dixon. Several more of the early settlers included:

  • Cooks, Scotts
  • Peers
  • Stickles 
  • Kanouses

Neighborhood

The township has the following unincorporated communities within its borders:

  • Deer Pond
  • Dixons Pond
  • Powerville
  • Rockaway Valley 
  • Sheep Hill

The area was originally covered in fields and woodlands. Much of the land has been preserved and is still undeveloped or utilized as green space for the community. Some of the parks and fields within the township include:

  • Rockaway Valley Aerodrome Fields
  • Leonard Park
  • Mountain Top
  • Tourne Park
  • Sheep Hill Park

On Rockaway Valley Road is a family-owned petting farm. The attraction offers many seasonal activities in addition to its annual activities, such as:

  • small train ride
  • feeding the animals
  • tractor rides
  • life-sized playhouse
  • mini-diggers
  • pedal tractors

Demographics

The population of the township was 4,263 in 2010, which made up 1,575 households and 1,150 families within 1,647 housing units. The racial makeup of the community was the following:

  • 92.35% white
  • 1.55% African American
  • 4.18% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.12% Native American
  • 3.99% Asian
  • 0.05% Pacific Islander
  • 0.54% other races
  • 1.41% two or more races

The community's median income by household was $117,333 in 2010. A family household ran $135,781. Men averaged a yearly salary of $102,250, while women averaged $62,452 per year. Some of the most common occupations included:

  • 6.5% facilities
