History

The area was purchased in 1702 and helped to form the Horseneck Tract, which took up much of the western region of Essex County. General George Washington traveled through the borough and ate lunch at Sander's house during the Revolutionary War. Another United States President with ties to the area was Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th President. Cleveland spent his first four years as a resident. His birthplace, now a historical museum, was built in 1832 and used as a Presbyterian Church. His family lived in the two-story house located off of Bloomfield Avenue from 1834 to 1841.
