Getting to Know the History of Caldwell, NJ

The personal injury lawyers in Caldwell, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys invite you to learn more about the history, and all this community has to offer its residents.

The borough of Caldwell is situated in the northwestern section of Essex County in the state of New Jersey. The borough takes up 755.2 acres and has an elevation of 397 feet or 121 meters. The neighboring communities include Essex Fells, Verona, West Caldwell, Roseland, and Cedar Grove. The main roadways within the community are Westville Avenue, Brookside Avenue, Central Avenue, Bloomfield Avenue, and Smull Avenue.

The area was purchased in 1702 and helped to form the Horseneck Tract, which took up much of the western region of Essex County. The tract, bought from the Lenape Native Americans, included 14,000 acres, with Caldwell being in the center. Saunders Sanders and Thomas Gould initiated settlements in 1740.

General George Washington traveled through the borough and ate lunch at Sander's house during the Revolutionary War. Another United States President with ties to the area was Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th President. Cleveland spent his first four years as a resident. His birthplace, now a historical museum, was built in 1832 and used as a Presbyterian Church. His family lived in the two-story house located off of Bloomfield Avenue from 1834 to 1841.

Additionally, the abandoned Erie Railroad helps to form one of its borders. The Olmsted Brothers designed it after being purchased between 1913 and 1916. The park offers residents and visitors the following amenities:

  • tennis courts
  • baseball fields
  • a playground
  • sand court
  • wading pool
  • a shelter house

Within the borough is Caldwell University, located off of Bloomfield Avenue. The Catholic university was founded in 1939 by the Sisters of Saint Dominic. It was an institute that allowed women to gain higher learning and was the first to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the state. Men were allowed to attend the university after a vote in 1985. Today the university offers as many as 13 graduate degree programs in addition to the many post-baccalaureate and post-master’s programs.
