A Look into the History of Glendale, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Glendale, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys, have sponsored the following article on the neighborhood's history.

Glendale is located within the Township of Vorhees that is situated in the central region of Camden County, New Jersey. The main area surrounds the intersection of Haddonfield-Berlin Road (County Route 561) and White Horse Road (County Route 673). The unincorporated community's elevation is 102 feet. The town is south of Greentree and north of Gibbsboro. Echelon is to its west, and Evesham is to the east.

The town is home to many businesses, retail shops, and residential subdivisions. Two of the historical landmarks found in the area include the Stafford Farm and the Glendale Methodist Episcopal Church.

Initially, the area was home to the Lenni-Lenape Native American Indians. They utilized the area for travel before the English settlers came. The son of John Stafford, a personal guard to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, established his estate in the nearby town of Cherry Hill in 1773. His estate expanded, and the 100-acre Stafford Farm would become property owned the longest by a single family. Although plans to develop the area have been proposed, they were met with much opposition from residents, the county, and the state to preserve the land.

In 1855 construction was complete on the Greek Revival style church that is located on Haddonfield-Berlin Road. The Glendale Methodist Episcopal Church consisted of an upstairs church and a downstairs school. The Glendale Methodist Sunday School, or Glendale School, is considered the oldest school in the county. The village residents that helped establish the school include the following:

  • Richard Stafford
  • Catherine Engle
  • Nixon Davis
  • Joseph C. Stafford
  • Jesse Patterson
  • Israel Riggins
  • Montgomery Stafford
  • Theodore Bishop

Walt Whitman was said to attend the service on weekends during the 1800s. During his visits, he would bathe in the creek at the back of the church's property and check in on the students attending class. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

With as many as 33.5% of the residents being foreign-born, it is no wonder that 15.5% speak the languages of India. The ancestral breakdown of the community is the following:

  • 32.7% Asian
  • 9.5% Sub-Saharan African
  • 7.7% Italian
  • 7.0% Irish
  • 5.9% German
  • 1.2% Lebanese

The neighborhood is predominantly an upper-middle-income area. The occupational breakdown of the areas working adults is the following:

  • 56.4% executive, management, and professional roles
  • 21.0% sales and service jobs
  • 14.3% clerical, assistant, and technical support positions
  • 8.2% manufacturing and laborer occupations
