Great Notch

The unincorporated community, Great Notch, is located in the eastern region of Little Falls Township within Passaic County, New Jersey. NJ Route 46 creates its northern border, and Peckman River forms its western border. Some main roadways in the neighborhood are Francisco Avenue, Lower Notch Road, and Clove Road. The town is about 18 miles from Manhattan, New York. 

History

During the Revolutionary War, the Watchung Mountains, located about five miles south of Great Notch, were essential for the soldiers to travel without being noticed. They also provided a great lookout when spying on the British army. General George Washington would strategically position men along these ridges that stretched more than 40 miles. A break in the cliff wall of ridges was referred to as the Great Notch. This notch provided a pathway for the soldiers. The area of present-day Great Notch was named for this pathway that heavily influenced the Revolutionary War. 

Neighborhood

The homes in the area sell on average for $535,635, which is more expensive than 79.4% of other New Jersey neighborhoods and 84.5% of other United States neighborhoods. Rent, on the other hand, is lower than 41.9% and averages $2,398 per month. With 21.9% of the population enrolled in college, it is no wonder that the area consists of both homeowners and renters with only a 1.7% vacancy rate. 

The area consists of upper-middle-income and is among the 15% highest in the country. The occupational breakdown of the adult working population is the following:

  • 46.7% executive, management, or professional roles
  • 28.7% sales or service jobs
  • 17.5% clerical, assistant, or technical support occupations
  • 7.2% manufacturing or laborer occupations

Education

The area is home to Montclair State University. The university has been a part of the community since 1908. The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education designated it a Research Doctoral University. It takes up 252 acres and is just 12 miles from New York City. On the campus, a 2,000-bed student housing facility with a dining complex. Some of the resident's halls include the following:

  • Frank Sinatra Hall - a six-story building containing 303 beds
  • Bohn Hall - 16 story community that homes approximately 500 students
  • Freeman Hall - a seven-story building with 260 residential suites
  • Russ Hall - the first student housing built in 1915 and holds up to 100 students
  • Stone Hall - this house is separated by gender and holds up to 140 students

Demographics

The neighborhood is relatively diverse, and as many as 13.4% were born in a country outside of the United States. English is spoken by 75.2% of the residents along with Spanish, and 5.8 % speak Arabic. The ancestral breakdown of the area is the following:

  • 30.1% Italian
  • 12.5% German
  • 11.1% Irish
  • 7.1% Polish
  • 6.8% Asian
  • 2.9% Lebanese
  • 2.1% Croatian
