A Quick Guide on the History of Interlaken, NJ

The car accident attorneys in Interlaken, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys have offered to share some of the borough's history for you to get to know the area.

Interlaken

The borough of Interlaken sits in the eastern region of Monmouth County in the state of New Jersey. The 249.6-acre community is surrounded on three sides by water, such as the 158-acre Deal Lake. The closest neighbors are Wanamassa, Allenhurst, Loch Arbour, Deal, and Asbury Park.

History

In 1667, Gavin Drummond purchased the area from the Lenape Native Americans. Later a Boston physician, Dr. Francis Weld, bought 364-acre and referred to it as Interlaken Farm, after a peninsula in Switzerland. The area resembled the peninsula as it sits between the two of Deal Lake.

In 1890, Weld founded the Interlaken Land Company and turned his farm into a residential community naming the avenues after English lakes and the cross streets after islands in the Irish Sea. Unfortunately, the development did not follow as planned. However, the Stormfelz-Lovely-Neville Company was contracted in 1905 to continue the project, and the neighborhood began to grow.

The borough was officially incorporated on March 11, 1922, and remains entirely residential as initially planned by Weld.

Neighborhood

The community is a dry town, meaning that alcohol cannot be sold within its borders. However, just across the border off of Main Street is Deal Lake Bar + Co. This is an American-style bar and eatery that offers dishes such as:
