Westwood

The borough of Westwood is situated in the central region of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey. The 1,472-acre community includes 25.6 acres of water, which includes Bogert Pond and Musquapsink Brook. Emerson is to the south of the borough, while Hillsdale is to the north. Harrington Park and Township of Washington are also neighboring communities. Kinderkamack Road cuts through the center of the town along with 1st Avenue and Mill Street. 

History

During the mid-18th century, European settlers began to arrive in the area. Initially, the area was inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Native Americans. The natives were hunters and trappers that moved about the area as the seasons changed.

Early settlers, including the Ackerman and Hopper families, created farms throughout the area. The Bogert family house, built in 1773, can still be seen as you travel down 1st Avenue. The development would begin in 1870 following the Hackensack and New York Railroad. Services on the train began in 1870 and took passengers from the borough to New York. Hotels were built by the train depot, and many European-influenced homes began to be built on Centre Avenue. Other amenities constructed during this development boom included:

  • lumber and coal sheds
  • stores
  • a bakery
  • a chapel
  • a triangular park

Neighborhood

Downtown offers many options to the residents for shopping and dining. The Westwood Plaza, located on Broadway, is an outdoor shopping center that has a

  • Farmhouse Cafe & Eatery

The 1,275-seat Pascack Theater, also known as the Westwood Cinema, opened in 1928 and has nine screens showing newer movies. The Fritz Deitl Ice Rink, which originally opened in 1958, offers the following to the residents:

  • open ice sessions
  • figure skating lessons
  • skating school
  • birthday party rentals
  • open hockey

Every Saturday, from May until November, a farmer's market is held in the parking lot of the Knights of Columbus off of Crest Street. During the summer, concerts are hosted in the park and times where residents can watch a movie that is projected on the back of the train station.

Demographics

The borough counted 10,908 residents, 4,438 households, and 2,858 families in 2010. This was a decrease of 0.8% from 2000. The population's racial makeup was as follows:

  • 82.98% white

  • 0.31% Native American
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 7.38% Asian
  • 1.93% two or more races
  • 2.77% other races
