Stratford

The borough of Stratford is locked in the central region of Camden County in the state of New Jersey. The borough had an elevation of 79 feet and took up 1,004.8 acres. The neighboring communities include H-Nella, Kirkwood, Laurel Springs, Lindenwold, Somerdale, and Echelon. 

History

Dutch and Swede settlers came into the area as far back as 1695. It became officially incorporated as a borough in 1798. Some of the farms owned by the early settlers included: 

• Lippincott
• Henchman
• Kaighn 

The White Horse Inn was constructed to accommodate the travelers coming into the neighborhood. White Horse Pike was named after the Inn. 

By the 19th century, the area was a vacation spot for the working class and the wealthy. Development increase in 1888 as Camden entrepreneurs realized the potential for the area. They purchased some of the farms and began to lay out the plans for developing the residential community it is today. 

Neighborhood

Within the community is Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. The university was founded in 1976 and is the only osteopathic medical college in the state. In 1987 the Specialty Care Center opened, and two years later, the Primary Care Center. It was in 1990 that the school became a four-year campus. 

The university sits next to the Jefferson Stratford Hospital off of East Laurel Road. The hospital has many locations and serves the communities located in Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties. 

Even further south on Laurel Road is the Laurel Manor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. The center offers a variety of rehabilitation plans, including:

Demographics

The borough was home to 7,040 residents in 2010, which made up 2,641 households and 1,822 families. The racial makeup of the townspeople was as follows:

• 0.18% Native American
• 4.22% Asian
• 0.07% Pacific Islander
• 2.77% other races
• 2.14% two or more races

The annual income median per household was $64,297 in 2010. The median family income was $86,375. Men averaged a yearly salary of  $63,879, while women averaged $40,243. Some of the top common occupations  held by the working residents included:
