History of the Township of Washington, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Township of Washington, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys have kindly sponsored the following details on the township's history.

Township of Washington

The Township of Washington is located in the central region of Bergen County, New Jersey. The 1,920-acre township has 32 acres of water, including Schlegal Lake and Musquapsink Brook. The nearest communities are Westwood, Emerson, Ho-Ho-Kus, Woodcliff Lake, and Ridgewood. The main roadway in the community is the Garden State Parkway, but others include Pascack Road, Washington Avenue, and Ridgewood Road.

History

The region was initially home to the Lenape Native Americans before Dutch, and other European settlers entered. The Native American population diminished during the late 16th and 17th centuries. Both European diseases and war attributed to the decimation of over 90% of the population by 1750.

In 1840, the township was formed, taking land from Harrington Township in between Saddle River and the Hackensack River. The township was named in honor of George Washington and originally took up 19,525 acres. Following the Civil War, the region's population increased drastically. However, the township had its most significant increase from 1950 to 1960 when it saw a 450.8% increase from 1,208 to 6,654 residents.

Historical Landmark

The township is home to the historic Seven Chimneys, a Dutch-style house built between 1745 and 1750. The house is located on Chimney Ridge Court. It is the oldest house in the township and the third oldest in the county. Originally the home also referred to as the Nicholas Zabriskie House, sat on a 500-acre farm.

General George Washington was known for using the house when he and his army was in the region. Additionally, Seven Chimneys was noted to have been used as a stop for the Underground Railroad.

Neighborhood

Just off of Pascack Road is a shopping center that includes stores such as:

  • Rite Aid
  • PNC Bank
  • a Post Office
  • Lili's Bistro
  • The Fresh Grocer of Washington

The privately-owned plaza is the township's single largest taxpayer. It is also home to a movie theater that offers various theatrical films. In the future, they have plans to host live music, performing arts, and stand-up comedy. The theater was formerly part of the Bowtie Cinemas chain, but in 2016 it dropped the name branding to become the Township Cinemas.

Demographics

During 2010 the township had 9,102 people, 3,261 households, and 2,632 families within its borders. The breakdown of the ethnicities within the population was the following:

  • 90.50% white
  • 5.44% Hispanic or Latino
