Turnersville

Turnersville is a census-designated place or CDP and an unincorporated community located in Washington Township situated in Gloucester County, New Jersey. The 956.8-acre community has 5.12 acres of water, such as the creek that flows from Grenloch Lake to Bells Lake. The roadways that make up the town borders are Hurffville Road, Hurffville Grenloch Road, Woodbury-Turnersville Road, and East Black Horse Pike. 

History

The first inhabitants of the neighborhood were the Lenni Lenape Native American tribes that mainly resided in encampments set up north of the community in Grenloch. They settled near the waterways, such as Grenloch Lake and the branches and creeks that flow from it. 

After the Europeans began settling in the surrounding areas, one of the first families that purchased land in the town was John C. Turner and his family. Turner owned a mercantile business that he passed on to his son, Jesse R. Turner. The town was named after John sometime in the early 1800s. Andrew Turner became the town's first postmaster. At one time, the neighborhood was home to two grist mills. Some of the Turner landowners included:

Neighborhood

The neighborhood offers its community a sense of safety since establishing the Washington Township Fire Department Station. The station is located on Hurffville Grenloch Road. 

On the border between the community and the Washington Township is the Wedgwood Country Club and Golf Course. The club was founded in 1965 and offered the area a great golfing experience in addition to serving as a party and wedding venue. 

Demographics

The community had a population of 3,742 in 2010 per the census. This consisted of 1,217 households and 1,069 families. This was a decrease of 3.2% from the count of 3,867 in 2000. The racial breakdown of the residents was the following: 

  • 91.74% white 
  • 3.58% African American
  • 2.38% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.08% Native American
  • 2.91% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 0.51% other races
  • 1.18% two or more races

According to the census, the median income per household within the neighborhood was $86,421 in 2000, and for a family income, it was $90,863. The median income for men was $59,911, while women averaged $43,929. The breakdown of the occupations held by the working townspeople included the following:

  • 55.0% management, professional, and executive occupations
  • 24.5% sales and service occupations
  • 10.2% office, technical, and administrative support roles
