A Historical Look into Union City, NJ

The personal injury attorneys in Union City, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys, have brought you the following article on the area's history.

Union City

Union City is located in the northern region of Hudson County, New York. The city is located 2.9 miles north of Hoboken and, when taking the Lincoln Tunnel, is only 4.4 miles from the Empire State Building in New York. It takes up 825.6 acres with no bodies of water within its city limits. However, the Hudson River is only 2.1 miles away.

Early History

Initially, the area was home to the Munsee-speaking Lenape Native American tribe. The first European settler was Henry Hudson, who referred to the area as New Netherland. The Dutch purchased the area that would become Hudson Couty from the Hackensack tribe. Until the early 19th century the area that is now Union City would lack any development. Hudson County was formed in 1840, and in 1925, Union City was incorporated.

After the Dutch and English settled into the area, German immigrants flocked in from Manhattan. Soon followed by the following:

  • Irish
  • Polish
  • Armenians
  • Syrians
  • Eastern European Jews
  • Italians

The 20th Century

On November 13, 1913, a grocery store in what is now Union City, would be the first to sell the chocolate-covered marshmallow cookies, Mallomars. Now produced in Ontario, the graham cracker-based cookie was only available during the cooler months of September through March.

In the 1920s, the area would become well known for its Hudson Burlesque. Union City theaters included acts by Fred Astaire and Harry Houdini in addition to vaudeville and burlesque shows.

The 1940s would begin the wave of immigrants from Cuba in search of work at the embroidery factories. Evidence of the transculturation was found in the following:

  • cuisine
  • fashion
  • music
  • entertainment
  • cigar making

The 21st Century

In the city's attempt to rekindle the historic Cuban heritage, the Cuban Day Parade became an annual event founded in 2000. The parade begins at North Bergen and ends in Union City. The city was rated one of the best small cities to live in by the AARP in 2015.

Neighborhood

As many as 21.60% of the adults in Union City have a bachelor's degree or higher. The average time residents take for their commute to work each way is 35.2 minutes.

  • 10.36% office and administrative support
  • 8.27% sales jobs

The historic Park Theatre was built in 1931 and became the home of the longest-running presentation of "The Passion Play." This production is the story of Christ's final days and has been performed since 1915. The new production is presented annually in Spanish, as the Christian community is predominantly Hispanic.

Demographics

As of 2010, the city's population was 66,455, including 22,814 households and 15,514 families. This was a decrease of 633 since 2000.
