Venice Park

Venice Park is an unincorporated community within the coastal Atlantic City situated in the eastern region of Atlantic County, New Jersey. Other unincorporated communities within the city include Great Island, Chelsea, and City Island. The neighboring towns are Brigantine, Atlantic City, Ducktown, and Pleasantville. 

History

In 1923 the Venice Park United Methodist Episcopal Church was established, and in the following year, the first cornerstone was placed. Over the years, the church served the community under different pastoral leadership. However, in the 1950s, many different issues, including segregation, forced the church to be split into several congregations, including: 

• United Methodist
• African Methodist Episcopal
• African Methodist Episcopal Zion

Other places of worship within the community include The Love Center Church and New Life Christian Fellowship. 

Neighborhood

The neighborhood is home to several parks that offer its residents a place to enjoy the outdoors. The Lagoon Playground, located on Columbia Avenue, offers the area the following amenities: 

• playground equipment
• shaded benches
• picnic pavilions
• a soccer field
• a basketball court

Located on North Ohio Avenue is Shellum Field & Playground, providing  students of the Venice Park School the following:

• Maud R. Greene Memorial Playground
• a football field 
• a baseball or softball field

The Cedar Food Market V located on West Riverside Drive is one of the few places to purchase items without heading into the city. 

The town is also home to a hotel on Absecon Boulevard, the Sunset Inn. The Penrose Canal is just a short walk from the hotel. Crossing over the bridge of Absecon, more retail and dining options are available. 

Demographics

The neighborhood has a large population of residents with both African ancestry and Sub-Saharan African ancestry. In addition to the majority of the townspeople speaking English, Spanish and Italian are also spoken. The breakdown of the ancestries found within the community include the following:

• 11.5% African
• 9.3% Puerto Rican
• 3.4% German
• 3.4% Italian

The area is a low-income neighborhood, and 46.8% of the children live below the poverty line. The occupational breakdown of the employed residents includes the following:
