Ventnor City is situated in the southern region of Atlantic County in the state of New Jersey. The city takes up 2,252.8 acres, of which 44.52% or 1,004.8 acres are water. The oceanfront community lies on the Atlantic coast. On either side of the town are Margate City and Ducktown. The city was named by Mrs. S. Bartram Richards, the wife of Camden and Atlantic Land Company's secretary-treasurer. She related the oceanfront to a seaside resort on the Isle of Wight. The community was named in 1889 and incorporated in 1903.
The city took shape as an automobile suburb in the early 20th century. No longer reliant on trains for transportation, the town was connected by Black Horse Pike to the city. Upscale houses attracted passing travelers, and it quickly became a new resort on the shorefront. In 1896 the community included just a handful of cottages, but by 1914, every corner was showing signs of development. In 1910 there were an estimated 100 houses, and by 1917 there were 1,300.
The John Stafford Historic District is located between South Vassar Square and South Austin Avenue, just off Atlantic Avenue. The area was designed by a well-known architect, Frank Seeburger.
