Verona

The township of Verona is located in the northern region of Essex County in the state of New Jersey. It covers a 1,804.8-acre area and has an elevation of 335 feet. Some neighboring communities include Cedar Grove, Caldwell, Essex Fells, Upper Montclair, and Brookdale. Bloomfield Avenue travels across the neighborhood while Peckman River flows north and south through its center. 

History

The first inhabitants of the area were the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. European settlement began after a group purchased a large tract of 14,000 acres in 1702. The tract was known as the Horseneck Tract because it was shaped similar to a horse's neck and head. Many communities made up the 14,000-acre tract, including:

• Caldwell
• West Caldwell
• Cedar Grove
• Essex Fells
• Fairfield
• North Caldwell
• Roseland

Between 1798 and 1892, the neighborhood and its neighbor, Caldwell, had many disagreements. The locals desired to break away and form their own government. This wish came true following a vote in 1892 to separate from Caldwell Township and form its own borough. It was officially incorporated into a township in 1981 to take advantage of better government aid. 

Parks and Recreation

The largest park and forest reserve in the area is the Eagle Rock Reservation. The reservation is located in the southeastern region and takes up 408.33 acres, of which most is located in Monclair or West Orange. The steep rock, after which it is named, offers views that encompass much of the Manhattan skyline. A memorial has been placed there to honor the attacks on September 11, after many residents gathered to view the destruction they caused.

Additionally, there are a few trails that offer the residents a chance to enjoy nature while exercising. The Lenape Trail offers some historic sites to view along the path. It is the fifth-longest in the state, and while it was established in 1982, it is said to follow actual footpaths taken by the Lenape Native Americans that once inhabited the area. 

Demographics

The township was home to 13,332 residents that formed the 5,315 households and 3,524 families. This was a decrease of 1.5% from the count of 12,533 in 2000. The township's population has been decreasing since 1970. The breakdown of the races within the community was the following:

• 3.45% Hispanic or Latino
• 0.02% Native American

• 1.27% two or more races
