Voorhees Township

Voorhees Township is a New Jersey suburb located in Camden County, New Jersey. The township covers 7449.6 acres, of which 108.8 acres is water, such as the Brookdale Echelon and Cedar Lakes. Gibbsboro and West Berlin are to the south of the area and Ashland to its north. Somerdale is to the west, and Evesham is to the east. 

History

The Lenni-Lenape Nation of Native American Indians were the first to dwell in the area. They took advantage of the resources that allowed them to fish, hunt, and cultivate the rich soil. Typical crops that were grown here included:

  • corn
  • pumpkin
  • beans

The tribes would walk to the coast during the hotter months. There they collected shells, smoked fish, and ate shellfish such as clams. The pathway was so worn that it later became known as Long-A-Coming Road, which is now Route 561, or Haddonfield-Berlin Road. 

The township was incorporated in 1899, taking land from Waterford Township. In 1924, portions of the township were used to form Gibbsboro. The area was named after the former Governor of New Jersey, Foster McGowan Voorhees. Voorhees was the 30th Governor of New Jersey and served from 1899 to 1902. He was affiliated with the Republican Party. Other landmarks that were named after him aside from the township and his estate include: 

  • Voorhees High School 
  • a dorm at Rutgers
  • Voorhees State Park 

The New Jersey American Water facility is based out of the township. It is recognized as the state's largest water utility and serves over two million people. Throughout New Jersey, 176 communities use the water utility company. 

Parks and Recreation

Within the area is Flyers Skate Zone, the training facility for the National Hockey League team, the Philadelphia Flyers. The attraction offers many services to the residents as well, including:

  • skate lessons
  • summer skate classes
  • figure skating
  • birthday parties 
  • gear retail

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the area's population was 29,131 and consisted of 11,470 households and 7,433 families. This was an increase of 3.6% from 2000's count of 28,126. The racial breakdown of the residents was the following:

  • 71.77% white
  • 8.70% African American
  • 3.43% Hispanic or Latino
  • 16.13% Asian
  • 0.15% Native American
  • 0.04% Pacific Islander
  • 0.84% other races
  • 2.36% two or more races

The average household income for the neighborhood was $82,146, increasing from $68,402 in 2000. The breakdown of occupations for the employed residents is the following:

  • 15.84% management, executive, or professional occupations 
  • 12.64% healthcare professions
  • 11.37% office and administrative support roles
