A Look into the Past of Voorhees Township, NJ

Voorhees Township

Voorhees Township is a New Jersey suburb located in Camden County, New Jersey. The township covers 7449.6 acres, of which 108.8 acres is water, such as the Brookdale Echelon and Cedar Lakes. Gibbsboro and West Berlin are to the south of the area and Ashland to its north. Somerdale is to the west, and Evesham is to the east.

The Lenni-Lenape Nation of Native American Indians were the first to dwell in the area. They took advantage of the resources that allowed them to fish, hunt, and cultivate the rich soil. Typical crops that were grown here included:

The tribes would walk to the coast during the hotter months. There they collected shells, smoked fish, and ate shellfish such as clams. The pathway was so worn that it later became known as Long-A-Coming Road, which is now Route 561, or Haddonfield-Berlin Road.

The township was incorporated in 1899, taking land from Waterford Township. In 1924, portions of the township were used to form Gibbsboro. The area was named after the former Governor of New Jersey, Foster McGowan Voorhees. Voorhees was the 30th Governor of New Jersey and served from 1899 to 1902. He was affiliated with the Republican Party. Other landmarks that were named after him aside from the township and his estate include:
