Washington Township

The township is located in the eastern section of Gloucester County in the state of New Jersey. Pitman and Sewell are the neighboring towns to the west of the township. Erial and Sicklerville are to the east. The main roadways in the neighborhood include Greentree Road, Egg Harbor Road, Hurffville-Cross Keys Road, and the Atlantic City Expressway that travels along the eastern edge. The town consists of 13,792 acres, of which 128 acres are water, such as Kandle Lake, Bells Lake, and Grenlock Lake. 


Grenloch Terrace is the township's oldest community and is located in the northeastern corner along Grenloch Lake. Before the European's settled in the area, it was home to the Lenni Lenape Native American Indian tribes. During this time, the area was a village called Tetamekon. As many as twenty Native American encampments were located throughout the township. 

The neighborhood is home to the Olde Stone House Historic Village, located off Egg Harbor Road. The home was built around 17 and belonged to George Jr. and Sarah Morgan and was one of the initial farmhouses built in the area before it began developing into the residential community it is now. The area is also home to four other historical buildings that were moved in order to preserve them; they include the following:

  • Turnersville Post Office
  • the Quay Farmhouse
  • the original Bunker Hill Church
  • the Blackwood Railroad Station


The neighborhood offers its townspeople many amenities such as the following:

  • Jefferson Washington Township Hospital
  • Scotland Run Golf Club
  • Turnersville AutoMall
  • Mama Buntz's Donut Company

The area also is host to many beautiful parks such as: 

  • Washington Lake Park
  • James G. Atkinson Memorial Park
  • Quay Park


The population for the township was 48,559 and consisted of 17,287 households and 13,328 families, according to the 2010 census. The racial makeup of the town's residents was the following:

  • 87.70% white 
  • 5.82% African American
  • 3.65% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.11% Native American
  • 3.78% Asian
  • 0.02% Pacific Islander
  • 0.85% other races
  • 1.72% two or more races

Per the 2010 census, the median income per household in the area was $79,017, with a margin of error of $3,281. This was an increase from $66,546 in 2000. The breakdown of the occupations held by the employed residents was the following:

  • 12.24% sales and service occupations
  • 12.05% management and executive occupations
  • 11.35% office and administrative support roles
