Wayside

The unincorporated community of Wayside is located along the border of Ocean Township and Tinton Falls Township. The main roadways in the neighborhood are Wayside Road, Hope Road, and West Park Avenue. The community lies in the ZIP code 07712 and has an elevation of 128 feet. Some of the nearby communities include Wileys Corner, West Deal, Oakhurst, Whitesville, and Asbury. 

History

The area was purchased from the original settlers, the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, as far back as 1664. The area was called New Shrewsbury and was possibly founded by James Grover, the ironworks owner. Grover Ironworks was one of the oldest in the country. Colonel Lewis Morris purchased half of the company in addition to 3,540 acres. 

In July of 1950, the community seceded from Shrewsbury Township and, in addition to Tinton Falls, became the Borough of New Shrewsbury. This did not last long, and in 1975, they renamed the greater community the Borough of Tinton Falls to avoid postal confusion.

Neighborhood

The Wayside Fire Company was established in 1919 and was first located at the corner of Green Groove Road and Wayside Road. Now the Fire Company is located on Volunteer Way, and they serve the greater area, including Ocean Township and Tinton Falls Township. 

The community is home to several places of worship for the residents to choose from, such as:

• St. George Greek Orthodox Church - located on Park Avenue
• The Presbyterian Church on the Hill - located on Cold Indian Springs Road
• Church of Saint Anselm - located on Wayside Road
• Wayside United Methodist Church - located on Park Avenue
• Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses - located on Park Avenue

Students in the community can attend the following schools:

• Hillel Yeshiva - located on Deal Road
• Ocean Township Intermediate School - located on West Park Avenue
• Wayside Elementary School - located on Bowne Road
• Shore Center for Students with Autism - located on Tornillo Way

Demographics

The community's population includes 16.6% that were born in countries other than the United States. Approximately 78.3% of the residents speak English as their primary language. As many as 6.9% speak Spanish, and 1.6% speak Portuguese. The ancestral breakdown includes: 

• 23.2% Italian
• 18.5% Irish
• 15.2% German
• 4.9% Puerto Rican
• 4.8% Asian
• 2.4% Hungarian

The community consists primarily of upper-middle-income households. The occupational breakdown of the working residents include:

• 44.8% executive, management, and professional occupations
• 32.5% sales and service jobs
• 12.3% clerical, assistant, and tech support occupations
• 10.3% manufacturing and laborer occupations
