Weehawken

The township of Weehawken is located in Hudson County, New Jersey. This coastal city lies on the Hudson River and takes up 947.2 acres. Interstate 495 runs through the center of the town before connecting to the Lincoln Tunnel crossing the state line into New York. The Empire State Building is only four miles away.

History

In 1859 the area of Weehawken was officially made a township by the New Jersey Legislature. The area was originally home to many farms growing orchard fruits and vegetables. 

During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington directed several men to take up camp in the area. The area was a prime location to set up a lookout to check on the British. Included in this group were Captain James Deas, Lafayette, and even Washington Irving. 

Close to where Dias would reside along the river, it would become a prominent place for duels. As many as 18 duels were documented and included was the famous one of Colonel Aaron Burr, the third sitting Vice President of the United States, and General Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury. 

Neighborhood

The area is home to many buildings constructed prior to World War II, making it one of the older towns. Weehawken can be broken down into four main sections including:

  • the Heights
  • Uptown (includes Kingwood Buff or "The Bluff")
  • the Waterfront
  • Downtown

The household income in the area averages $62,435, and the family income $90,903. It is a moderately upper-income community, and as many as 89.2% working in white-collar positions. The average commute time for workers is just over 35 minutes each way. More than 58.27% have earned a four-year or higher college degree. The occupational breakdown of the working adults in the town are the following:

  • 16.36% executive or management occupations
  • 13.03% business and financial occupations
  • 9.91% teaching

  • the Hamilton Memorial - located on Hamilton Avenue
  • the 9/11 Memorial - located on the Hudson River Walk 
  • the Weehawken Public Library - built in 1904 - located on Hauxhurst Avenue
  • the Weehawken Water Tower on Park Avenue - built in 1883

The town's population was 12,554 in 2010 and included 5,712 households and 2,913 families. This was a 7% decrease since 2000. Close to 16.3% of the population was under 18, and the median age is 37.2. Approximately 36.65% of the population was born in a country other than America. While most speak English as their first language, some speak Spanish and Chinese. The racial makeup of the town was the following:

  • 71.85% white
  • 4.83% African American
  • 40.27% Hispanic or Latino
  • 8.16% Asian
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 0.49% Native American
  • 10.76% other races
  • 3.91% two or more races
