West Deal

West Deal is a neighborhood within the unincorporated community of Wanamassa. It lies in the eastern region of Monmouth County within Ocean Township in the state of New Jersey. Neighboring communities that share a border are Wertheins Corner, Interlaken, Whitesville, Asbury Park, Deal Park, and Oakhurst. The main roadways through the neighborhood are New Jersey Route 35, Logan Road, Chestnut Avenue, Roseld Avenue, and Wikapecko Drive. 

History

In the summer months, the area was initially the home of the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. They had settlement camps along the water's edge, such as Harvey Brook and the 158 acre Deal Lake. Artifacts and remnants can still be found along the banks of these waterways. 

The Dutch colonists settled around 1609, with Henry Hudson being one of the first to step foot on the area off of his ship, the Half Moon. It was not long until the British took control in 1664. Without roads, the area had little development throughout most of the 18th century. The few settlements were occupied by Quakers and Baptists, immigrants who desired religious freedom. 

Neighborhood

In the northern section of the neighborhood is the 175 acre Hollywood Golf Club and Golf Course. The golf course was established in 1898 by a group of businessmen from New York City. Along with thier families, they had already been spending their summers in the area. With the help of golf architect Thomas M. Bendelow, the course was designed on the grounds of a former Hollywood Hotel. The course has expanded over the years, beginning with a 3,108-yard nine-hole course and became the 7040-yard championship course it is today. 

Most of the community's business district is located along New Jersey Route 35. Some of the shops visitors can find along this path include:

Demographics

English is the first language of 86.4% of the townspeople. Additional languages spoken in the area are Polish, spoken by 8.3% of the residents,  and Spanish. As many as 10.7% of the residents were born in countries other than the United States. Some of the ancestries they identify with include:

• 14.1% English
• 8.5% Polish
• 1.6% Austrian
