A Closer Look at West Englewood, NJ

The workers' comp lawyers in West Englewood, NJ, at NJ Injury Guys offer the following insight on the town's history and highlights.

West Englewood

The unincorporated community of West Englewood is located in the township of Teaneck in the southern half of Bergen County, New Jersey. The community is west of Englewood and Englewood Cliffs. Bergenfield is to the north of the community, while Teaneck Town Center is to its west. New Jersey Route 4 and Palisade Avenue help form two borders while Teaneck Road forms the eastern border.

History

The area was originally home to the Lenni Lenape Native American Indians. They had settlements along the ridge on what is now known as Queen Anne Road. They had campsites along the Hackensack River and along the Overpeck Creek. Teaneck Road is home to several early European settlements, and several of the Dutch houses built in the 1700s still stand today. Most are located just south of the community and include:

  • 1728 - Brinkerhoff-Demarest House – 493 Teaneck Road
  • 1830 - Adam Vandelinda House – 586 Teaneck Road
  • 1805 - James Vandelinda House – 566 Teaneck Road

Park History

Within the community are two historical parks, Votee Park and Windsor Park, both located along the western border. Windsor Park is the oldest in the Teaneck Township and was established in 1933. A small creek runs through the northern section and is host to many fish, such as Killies. The 22-acre park is the home to several trails that offer its visitors a chance to view wildlife, such as:

  • deer
  • wild turkey
  • red foxes
  • groundhogs

Construction for Votee Park began in 1939, under the persistence of Milton G. Votee. Votee became the town's mayor following a disputed taxation he was unhappy with. He served as the town's mayor for 12 years and turned a mosquito-ridden swamp area full of trash into the 40.69-acre gem it is today. After much-needed dredging and draining followed by filling, the area was complete and dedicated as Central Park in 1943. It would not be until 16 years later that the park was renamed in his honor as Votee Park. Amenities found in the park include:

  • playground equipment
  • softball field
  • picnic areas with grills
  • two basketball courts
  • a community pool
  • splash pad
  • two handball courts
