Williamstown

The unincorporated community is a census-designated place or CDP that is situated in the southeastern region of Gloucester County, New Jersey. It is located in the Monroe Township and spans 4750.72 acres. Its neighboring towns include Sicklerville, Cross Keys, and Glassboro. 

History

Before the Europeans settled in 1737, the area was home to the Lenape Native American Indian tribe. They had named the area Squankum, for which the Squankum Branch is still named. However, after the first post office was established, the town was renamed after Richard Penn's grandson, John Williams. Penn was a prominent landowner in the 18th century. He left his grandson the land that would later be divided into sections and sold to the settlers. 

Neighborhood

The area is home to the Williamstown Farmers Market that was established in the 1950s before coming to the area in 1993. The founders were the Stoltzfus family from Lancaster County, PA. Some of the current vendors in addition to the Village Shoppes that can be found there include:

  • Rosie's Bakery
  • Stoltzfus Family Produce
  • Stony Hills Meats

Demographics

Per the census 2010, the area's population was 15,567, which consisted of 5,592 households and 4,037 families. This was an increase of 31.8% from the 2000 census count of 11,812 that consisted of 4,484 households and 3,223 families. The majority of the residents speak English, but a few speak Italian and Polish. The racial makeup of the CDP's population was  the following:

  • 80.43% white
  • 13.08% African American
  • 5.27% Hispanic or Latino
  • 2.04% Asian
  • 0.19% Native American
  • 0.01% Pacific Islander
  • 1.79% other races
  • 2.45% two or more races

The average income per household was $44,200 in 2000. The occupational breakdown of the working citizens was the following:

  • 18.83% office and administrative support roles
  • 9.84% sales and service positions
  • 8.85% management and executive positions
